This was a Design and Build contract where we engaged in early collaboration with the client and engineer. Among our achievements were value engineering cost savings of 38% and reducing the construction programme from 20 weeks to 12 weeks. The shorter build was advantageous not only to the client, but to the Taranaki community. It reduced the period of building-related health, safety and security risks for New Plymouth Airport staff and users, as well as for our own workers and subcontractors. These risks significantly influenced our methodology, as building work took place 30 metres away from a ‘live’ runway where FOD control was of strict importance.
